Time to go to Mackinac Island!

After a fantastic day in Mackinaw city it was time to take the ferry over to Mackinac island. There are two ferry choices and we decided on Sheplers-just look at the amazing dock:

I also liked that you could park all day for free and not have to worry about the car-many places had time limits on how long you could leave your car even on the street.

The boat was very quick and a calm ride on the day we went-I also liked that they gave a mini tour/history on the way over so it seemed like we were there in no time. On the way there we sat upstairs enjoying the fresh air and wind and on the way back opted to sit inside. Both were well kept and made for an enjoyable ride. I would recommend the ferry since it has a larger dock and more options overall for travel.

On the move again:Mackinaw City Michigan

Do you like camping? I have to admit I am not a huge camping fan but little miss was very excited to go this summer. We decided to take a quick trip up to Mackinaw City and visit the island. Now last time we were camping was a few years ago and it rained both in and out of the tent. By the end of the first night we were wet and cold and nobody had a great time. So why on Earth did I decide to try it again? Tee pee Campground is on a beach! Yes that is right-here is the view I woke up to each morning:

Everyone was so nice it was incredible! The office was amazing and each spot seemed perfect no matter where the location. This was little misses favorite part-playing in the water with her new found friends:

We even found a “magic stick” in the office that turned the campfire all sorts of colors as it burned-talk about a “magical” experience for our entire family. The lots were very spacious and we had enough room to have our tent, a kids tent, the car, and all of our things. Each spot has its own fire pit and picnic table. Now I am sure you are thinking camping is camping what makes this place special? I would have to say three things:
1. The friendly staff & guests. There was even a bonfire on Saturday night with a person playing a guitar and an overall welcome feeling from everyone.

2. The bathrooms-I have never seen such clean “public” bathrooms. The shower was spacious enough for little miss to shower with me each night and the bathroom was so clean no matter what time of day we went. I think this really made me feel more at home and made the camping experience more pleasant.

3. Location, Location, Location! This spot is so close to Mackinaw city it is incredible. Just look at our view of the bridge from our camping site:

We really loved not having to travel far to experience the city and it was so close we could easily drive back and forth to break up our day. I am very pleased with the experience and will be traveling back next summer to stay at this great hidden gem.

Time to Visit Iowa!

Well we were off to Iowa for a few short days and it was fantastic! My daughter only wanted to see a cow on her trip....here is her dream come true!
This was a field full of cows on our way to the Amana Colonies...if you have a tomtom gps follow the signs for the colonies not the gps. We were so lost and finally ended up in the center of an adorable town-thanks helpful stranger for your great directions! Next we ended up in the colonies with was pleasantly surprising. We are very much on the go type of people so we were unsure of how the slow pace shops would fit into our ideal vacation. If you travel to the colonies I highly recommend the dandelion wine-it was delicious! We spent the afternoon roaming around the shops and visiting the various bakeries and wineries. Little miss ended up with an adorable couch tissue box holder and I found great handmade jewelry.
After the colonies it was time to visit the Tanger Outlets:
The weather was perfect and there were so many great sales! For the first time in a long time we left a place with something for everyone. It is usually very difficult to find something we all enjoy so this was a high point of the trip. My husband find a great new silicon coffee cup from Harry & David along with all these great snacks
I thought the chocolate covered cherries were amazing and the whole family agreed that everyone has to try the Moose Munch-what a sweet, crunch snack!

After a long day of shopping it was time to head on our way home. Although we were only in Iowa a few short days it was the perfect slow down kind of vacation. Be on the look out for our next stop-Mackinaw City, Michigan!

St. Louis Day 2!

St. Louis Day #2! There was way to much to post in one so I decided to break up St. Louis into two.
Day two was just as much fun as day one-much more walking and activity which left us with an exhausted little miss. We started the day going up The Arch-it was a very tight place and although the view was amazing I had a horrible experience. This is not a place to go if you are claustraphobic!
The pod was so tiny and three minute ride to the top feels like a lifetime. Just look at the tight space:
We did do the free museum underneath about Lewis & Clark which was a hit which all the “stuffed animals” to see and explore. After our experience we decided to head a bit out of town and go to the Magic House. From the moment you walk in the doors you are greeted with activities everywhere! The first exciting adventure was everyone wearing stickers instead of wrist bands for admission. Littl miss just loved that we all had on “fancy circle sticker”. We came in by the art room where little miss was able to paint a photo then put it on the drying rack to dry while we visited the rest of the museum. As a mom it is the little things that are impressive-who doesn't love not having to hold a wet paiting for hours or run to the car to drop it off! Added bonus look at this cute smock holder-craft room project in our future! Moving on we went to the first floor which was nothing but amazing. We were greeted by tons of tiny exhibits that were themed-our favorite the vet clinic:
They also had a grocery store for shopping and checking out and a river that you could fish and so many great exhibits to see but our favorite was the bean stalk that little miss could climb from bottom to top with a staircase that you could follow your child-which for us helicopter parents is huge!
We then ended our day with the bubble room where little miss was in a life size bubble-such a thrill for her that she still talks about being a “bubble girl”. There are so many great things to see and do and so many floors to explore this would take up an entire day and still have the kids curious for more. Want to visit Magic House? Registrar using the rafflecopter form below to win your very own 4 pack of tickets.

Let the travel adventure begin-first stop St. Louis!

So we begin. I have decided to set the ultimate goal of traveling to all 50 states before little miss leaves for college which gives me 14 summers! I know that sounds like a ton of time but I know that it will fly by and be gone before I can even blink. So we decided to begin our grand adventure this summer and travel to Missouri, Nebraska, and Iowa. It was an easy five hours between stops so little miss did not get super antsy. Read each post below to highlight each of the fine states!

On to our first stop St. Louis, Missouri! At first glance I did not expect there much to do except The Arch. We did book a river boat cruise but because of the extreme flooding it was cancelled which left us with two days to explore the grand city. We had such an amazing time and I would recommend to anyone looking for a family friendly vacation. Our fist stop was the sculpture park downtown which had this great little rock exhibit that you could hop about from stone to stone. I loved that we could not only look at the sculpture but explore and really enjoy it as a family. Soon we found lunch quickly approaching and found a food truck near by for a quick bite. I must say this was on my “to do” list since I have seen food trucks all over tv but we do not have any in our small town. After lunch we went on to little misses top choice attraction The Sweet Divine Cupcakes. You may have seen them on a little show called cupcake wars with the winning cupcake-the drunken pig!
I had the pleasure of meeting the owner and learning all about her grand cupcake adventure. The shop began as an in home cupcake/cake business that has skyrocket into an adorable store and cupcake truck. The husband/wife team has been in the business for 10 years making home cakes and expanded to a food truck three years ago. When cupcake ware came for auditions they decided to audition and soon became the winners with their delicious creations. I decided to try the Drunken Pig, Strawberry Shortcake, Chocolate Carmel, and Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough.
I must say that my personal favorite was the Drunken Pig. At first I must admit that I was a little skeptical with cheese and bacon mixed into any bakery but the flavors melted in your mouth to an incredible treat. Little miss was all about the chocolate chip cookie dough-it had bites of cookie dough throughout the cupcake and covered in chocolate chips on top. My husband could not decided and he said he votes “all of them” but after pushing a little more he settled on the Strawberry Shortcake. There were strawberry chunks in the batter and was the perfect blend of a sweet summer treat. The cupcake flavors every week and I am eager to try the cherry coke cupcake....is it sad to plan a vacation around a cupcake flavor? If you are in St. Louis you can visit the cupcake shop at 1801 S.9th Street in St. Louis (they are closed Mondays) or follow the food truck to their location. You can find the food truck location on their facebook page and the flavors of the week. This is a must with their great prices and a flavor for everyone! We then ended our day at the zoo which has free admission. Next time we visit we will go first thing in the morning-the stingray section and carousel are free the first hour the zoo is open. What a great relaxing day!
